Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or better known simply as COPD, is the cause of many deaths each year. COPD involves several different lung diseases. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other lung illnesses are among the diseases attributing to COPD. When a person gets a lung disease, they often get other lung diseases as well. An airflow obstruction is the major concern. Although a cure for copd does not exist, varieties of treatments are available for managing and slowing the progression of this disease. Treatment varies with each phase of the disease, in place of a cure for copd.
COPD is a slowly progressing disease. Without any cure for copd, patients often struggle with this disease for many years after it has been diagnosed. Often this disease begins with a dry cough. Many people do not realize they have the disease until they visit their doctor for a normal checkup. When the doctor does a routine check, he notices the wheezing and abnormal breathing. Pneumonia and other respiratory infections become more frequent as it advances. Daily activities become harder to perform because of the difficulty breathing.
Without some type of cure for copd available, the best practice is to manage it, to keep it from getting worse. Patients often need to use bronchodilators, such as a hand held nebulizer or an inhaler. Other patients need the use of additional oxygen. Doctors often prescribe steroids to help manage the disease. As it progresses, pulmonary rehabilitation therapy is used.
Individuals that smoke are at a higher risk for COPD. Many environmental substances, as in air pollution, irritating fumes, dusty environments and chemical irritants play a major role in irritating COPD. Additionally, anyone that has COPD in his family may be at risk through inheritance. While there is no actual cure for copd, early detection and proper treatment is critical for the best management. Anyone who notices a shortness of breath or a dry cough should consult with his doctor. Although a proven cure for copd is not available, the sooner it is diagnosed and treatment started, the better the symptoms can be controlled, and the disease managed.
