Ever since the Household Goods Transportation Act was signed in 1980, a lot of companies started offering interstate and intrastate moving services. Prior to 1980, there were only a few moving companies in existence since the price was not yet deregulated at that time and the moving industry was under the ICC. So at that time it moving companies are like public utilities in the way they operate and getting authority to operate interstate. But after the price deregulation and the moving industry became under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration the industry moving companies can get their interstate authority in weeks. This resulted in thousands of companies now offering moving services. And with the price deregulation many companies find themselves facing stiff competition. This is the reason why many moving companies resort to low balling scam.
A low balling scam is when the movers give very low quote for the move so that the consumer will choose them over other movers that have higher estimates. Now, once the belongings is ready to be delivered to the new location, the movers then will call the customers and ask for additional hundreds to thousands of dollars before they will deliver the belongings. In other words, the movers will hold everything hostage until the customer is forced to pay for them. And the longer it takes for the customer to pay for the additional charges, the higher the charges will be. This is because the movers this time will charge storage fee on daily basis.
Therefore there are important things customers should find about their movers before hiring them for the move. The most important thing about the mover is their track record. This is how long they have been in the business, their claims and complaints history and their consumer ratings. A good way to make sure not to hire movers that scam their customers is by checking these things first. If the company has been in the business long enough, do not have past unsettled claims and has not had any complaint about scamming their customers and have very high consumer rating, then chances are it is a good and reliable moving company. Second, one should make sure that the movers have all the right insurance. This will guarantee coverage in case of damages and loss. Lastly, one should make sure that the movers will do the move and will not hire third party movers.
