My husband and I recently decided to move to England for a couple years. My husband was offered a spot in a fantastic MBA program there, so we thought it would be a nice change of scenery. We put our beloved house of a decade on the market, rather than try to rent it while we were away. Trying to manage a renter, while across an ocean sounded difficult. In addition, we think we might move elsewhere when we come back to the states. We knew we were going to need some sort of self storage, while we were away. Once we had the initial meeting with our realtor, it became apparent that we were going to be good friends with the joy of self storage.
As our realtor wandered through the house taking notes, we wondered what she had in store for us (no pun intended). "Alright, if you are ready for me to be brutally honest, I am ready to give you the low down on the things you should do to get this beautiful house ready," she said. We let her know that we were prepared to get down to business. Then, out of her mouth, came the best advice I could ever give someone who is selling a house. "This is no longer your house." "Once you realize that, it makes it much easier to get the house ready." Long before we packed up the big stuff for London, we were going to need Self storage for lots and lots of things the realtor said should not be hanging about. She told us to take down all personal pictures and make the bookshelves only one third full. People who are shopping for a house want to picture their things in the house. So, we were told to replace our red and orange modern duvet cover with an all white ensemble in the master bedroom. That was only the beginning. By the time she was done with the list, we needed another house to put all the things from our house that someone else might not like.
We rented a unit with a self storage company about ten blocks from the house. We took a lot of stuff over there. A few days before the open house, the guys from the Victorian rental place brought in the stuffy furniture and they took our comfy stuff to the self storage place. Luckily, it did not take too long to sell the house, so we could then focus on what we would put in storage, what we would take to London and what we would sell on Craigslist. We rented another self storage unit near my parents in another state. That entailed driving a rented moving truck up one weekend before we left. We emptied the self storage unit we rented when we were selling the house, moved some of the contents to a new storage place, shipped some of it to England, and sold what we thought we would not want later. I felt like it was all very George Carlin with the "you gotta move to a new place to hold your stuff" shtick. Related Content Storage | Portable storage |
