Looking at patch computer software?

If you ask me, computers are the most complicated things in the world. Sometimes when I am typing or checking my email, it occurs to me just how vastly complex the machine I am using is. Thankfully, I have decent antivirus and security software, so I do not often have problems with it. But then I realize, the patch software on my laptop fixes problems without my knowing about it. What on earth would I do if the right patch was not on my computer?
Frankly, I have no idea what I would do without the network of patch systems that keeps my computer in check. In fact, I do not even think my computer would run without them. So what are they, anyway?
From my own rudimentary understanding of what a patch is and how it works, the first thing to know is that there are several different kinds, and they do different things. A hot patch is like a quick fix; it goes in and fixes the problem without shutting down the computer. A security patch is what it says, a troubleshooter that patches holes in your security network. Computer games use patches a lot because they can be incompatible with other programs, especially in multiplayer games.
Essentially, if you are like me and do not have much emotional investment in the inner workings of your computer, you can go your whole life without needing to know any specific details about a patch. But if you are like me and want to know what your computer technician is telling you, even if it goes right over your head, the word patch will come up, and you can impress him or her with your extensive knowledge of software updates.
Patch management is another aspect of computer software that involves the different kinds of patches all working together, and that itself can necessitate more patches. Like any technological feat, some patches are better than others. The good ones do their job; the bad ones wreak havoc on your computer. This might not be something you have control over, but if you are considering getting a degree in computer engineering or software design, they are definitely something you want to know about.
